She paused, pen hovering, and laughed softly at the idea of making art after a decade of telling herself she was “not talented.” The laugh loosened something. It was the first honest sound she’d made since the breakup three months earlier — the one that had left rooms suddenly too big and routine too bright with missing pieces. There’s a name etched into the very back cover. 'Elara.' I don't know an Elara. But I think I’m going to find out why she hid this.

Inside wasn't gold or jewelry, but a collection of old photographs from the 1950s. They featured a young woman with a sharp bob haircut and a laugh that seemed to echo right through the faded black-and-white gloss. On the back of the most vibrant photo, a message was written in elegant, looping cursive: “To new beginnings, whatever the cost. – E.” This is page one
